"Scrabulous is disabled for US and Canadian users until further notice."

an informal survey over at linux haxor:

Ubuntu (54%, 150 Votes) Debian (12%, 34 Votes) Gentoo (8%, 21 Votes) Fedora (6%, 17 Votes) SUSE (6%, 17 Votes) Others (6%, 16 Votes) Arch (3%, 9 Votes) Mint (2%, 5 Votes) Slackware (2%, 5 Votes) Mandriva (1%, 2 Votes)

i know ubuntu is really gaining traction when i hear 2 older women talking at the register in front of me and one said she hated her windows machine and had her son put ubuntu on it and was gushing about it. and bill has been gushing too about it.

me? linux still hasn't made it onto my desktop, but debian has been my ace on the servers... todd went to ubuntu on his server last year only because of debians goofy release schedule. ubuntu desktop is very clean and easy to use though, i keep saying i'm gonna ditch windows but theres always just a couple programs i need/want. and os/x is so damn sexy. what's a poor geek to do who can't afford a mac just right now? yes i know about osx86, i apparently need a sata drive to get it going on my motherboard and i don't have one handy.... yet...

i was going to go on about vista SP1. but won't, i'm sure you've heard it all before. nutshell version: it's purdy and nothing really new was brought to the table. stick with XP really unless you got some beefy hardware.

TR2N

TR2N is cleverness for Tron 2. tron 2.0 is a game and apparently too obvious a name given old school software numbering. anyhow a very tiny bootleg of the trailer has leaked. saw the dark knight today, watchmen next spring.

tr2n maybe in 2010? wait isn't 2010 the sequel to 2001. it's weird now living through the years that were used as the "far off future" in movies. august 29, 1997--judgment day, 2001, 2010 is coming up. back 2 the future II & III partially took place in 2015, where's my mattel hover board or my self lacing nikies? the future of mad max will be soon if gas prices keep going up.

i keep waiting for the future depicted in the jetsons. pod apartments in the sky. puttering little domed skycars. rosie keeping george in line. jobs that involve just pushing one button. maybe on a rough day 5 or 6 times. jane! jane! get me off this crazy thing.

so far the future isn't what it was cracked up to be. no time travel, no space travel outside of the lunar orbit. no global thermo nuclear war. no hover cars. no mutant zombies. no warp drive. no matrix.

just faster computers, cell phones, global networking, rising fuel/energy costs, and the fall of communism (well there is still china, cuba and north korea).

i'm looking at you hollywood, i feel ripped off! i want my holodeck future and i want it now!

hows that for perspective? entire cities are not even a pixel on that, and it's at the best resolution as it is. yow!

linux traitor

so at the new job, i'll be sorta keeping tabs on the network and server. which is all windows. totally new territory for me really.

so we went to borders and the owners bought me a server 2003 book for the current machines and a server 2008 book for future use. i felt somewhat like a benedict arnold at the register buying them. but the cute nerdy girl behind the register made me forget what a horrible linux nerd i am, it's funny how that works.

exchange, iis, active directory, office 2k7 with the ribbon (not as bad as everyone makes it out to be), and ms-sql..... what fun it will be learning all this new stuff! at least i'm piecing together a debian box with the usual suspect programs on it to run a mailing list. oh noes i'm gonna be a spammer too! (i jest, these emails are people we've done business with)

carded!

|

yesterday me and bill popped into chapel hill mall so i could grab a quick haircut and meet up with todd. yeah more mallratting. well we didnt stay long so......

anyhow when we get there and are going into the mall near the food court we're greeted by a mall security person. he approaches us and asks if we are familiar with the new policy where you have to be 18 to go to the mall unless you're accompanied by a parent. we say no, he describes it to us for a minute, my eyes glaze over. at this point i think bill is snickering a little. then he asks pretty politely if he were to ask for ID if we'd have it. so at this point i'm snickering pretty good and we show him.

WTF carded to go to the mall?

i guess it's to keep the hoodlums out of the mall. you know those rabbid chapel hill teens.... i'm not sure that there's really a problem with it there, i've been loitering at that mall for years now and never really ran into any problems. pretty much i suspect its because "kids dont spend any money and might cause trouble" and a form of age discrimination (or size of wallet discrimination?)

i recently took up a webmaster position at a little shop in canton. they mostly do dell laptop sales & repairs and are looking to push their web presence a bit.

i'm staying with someone in canton. not my ideal city but life is cruel sometimes and we can't always have what we want. right now booger is staying with my brother as there is a no pet clause in the lease where i'm staying :(

so hopefully those of you in the 330 i haven't seen in a little while we can catch up. lets have some wings sometime maybe?

the vice guide to north korea

|

the vice guide to north korea in 14 parts. each is a few minutes.

it's a view into a world most of us couldn't begin to imagine. keep in mind they are trying to show him the best there is to offer there.

but if you're not gonna watch the whole thing from the beginning, just skip to part 14. it's funny the song he chose to karaoke. irony at it's best. part 13 is also interesting in the huge production for the benefit of what appears to be very few people.
